Changes in the port area of Bremen
For nearly a year and a half, I regularly toured the harbor area, always asking myself how a neighborhood change could be observed through the structural transformation in the port. I explored its hidden side streets as well as its busy main roads, trying to immerse myself more and more in the area. My photographic focus was on the architecture of the remaining buildings, the visual traces of structural change, and the remnants of the former port, which today feels like a relic from a bygone era. The Hafenarchiv Walle (Brodelpott) also helped me in this endeavor. I sifted through thousands of photos and books, as well as stories from witnesses of a different time—a time when the harbor looked very different than it does today. In my publication, I want to tell the story of today and yesterday, of transience and new beginnings. It is a story about the character of the neighborhood from past generations, closely tied to its work, slowly being overlaid by new layers of harbor history, and which never completely disappears.
